about
As you know, we've been recording with a trio recently and we had a
session scheduled during a lull in the Mardi Gras mayhem, Friday February 22. Well, that Monday I get an email from a local radio producer and on-air personality wondering if we could record a birthday present for her girlfriend. The tune she wanted was Simon and Garfunkle's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
Although I wasn't at first convinced it would work for Panorama, there were a few advantages. I adore the song, we already had a terrific singer scheduled for the date, we were short on material for the session and Panorama was short on bread. The client was offering a nice amount to help cover the cost of the session, so I gave it some serious consideration.
It didn't take long before I came up with a concept and ran it past local vocalist Yulene Velásquez. Yulene had recorded with us once before (see "Recordando A Venezuela," our October 2015 release) and we were planning to record another Venezuelan number, "La Negra Atilia," scheduled for May. She and her husband, Panorama accordionist Michael Ward-Bergeman, ran through the number at home and she let me know that she had an angle on it.
So we added Bridge Over Troubled Water to the docket. For this one, I borrowed a bass clarinet from a friend and wrote an arrangement setting the tune in a Cuban bolero tempo. The lyric conveys a nice sentiment for Lent, too.
Thanks for listening! We appreciate your support and hope you dig the music.

lyrics
Bridge Over Troubled Water
When you're weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes I will dry them all
I'm on your side when times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
When you're down and out, when you're on the street
When evening falls so hard I will comfort you
I'll take your part when darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Sail on silver girl, sail on by
Your time has come to shine all your dreams are on their way
see how they shine if you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
