about

Panorama April 2015 drop was a Creole mazurka we recorded just a few days before hand, March 6th, at one of our favorite venues in New Orleans, the Old US Mint which is run by the Louisiana State Museum and the National Park Service. Known as a "Mazouk" in Creole, this rhythm is similar to the biguines we've been offering but in three quarter time, with an extra beat each measure. This is no waltz, however, but a hot, syncopated three.

Dansez La Mazouk ("Dance the Mazurka") comes from Martiniquan accordionist Emile Trébeau (his last name means "very handsome") and was brought into the repertoire by "Accordion Emeritus," Patrick Farrell. It was originally performed on a C diatonic accordion (vs a chromatic upon which one can play in any key). In the relative key of A minor, when the band goes to the V chord (E7), the melody in this case still includes a G natural instead of a G sharp, giving the tune a modal color.

The featured soloist for this one is accordionist Matt Schreiber. This track is also the Panorama recording debut of alto saxophonist Tomas Majcherski and trombonist Jon Ramm since our regular cats weren't able to make that night.
