about

We recently had the opportunity to play a concert in a venerable New Orleans landmark, the old Luthjens' Dance Hall (pron. "LOOT-yens"). At the corner of Chartres and Marigny Streets in the Faubourg Marigny, Luthjens' was the scene of countless down-home gigs featuring such culture bearers of New Orleans Jazz as George Lewis and Billie and Dede Pierce. Cheap beer, bring the kids and let's make a party. Luthjens' eventually went out of business in 1981 and the place sat vacant for a while.

I actually have a memory of walking past the door sometime in the early 90's when I lived in the Marigny. At the time I'd never heard of Luthjens' and just knew it as an unremarkable cement block building across the street from The Friendly Bar. The door was open and there was a commotion going on inside. I poked my head in and found myself embroiled in some kind of Pentecostal revival! As a Quaker, that level of ruckus isn't my scene but I was curious so I went in. The pastor asked me my name and then I remember him going, "Thank God for Ben! Thank God for Ben!"

In recent years, the building was bought by Panorama friend Julian Mutter who has leased it to sound engineer Rick Nelson. And Rick has turned it into the Marigny Recording Studios. Which brings me to today's track.

Julian called me several months ago to ask if we'd like to play there and have the concert recorded. The guests would each get a CD of the evening's music. I said we'd be delighted but could we share the music with our subscribers? Everybody agreed that would be terrific and a couple weeks ago, on Valentine's Day, we played for a lovely crowd and had a wonderful time.

You may be familiar with the "Dulgo Horo" ("Long Dance" in Bulgarian) from our first CD, "Another Hot Night in February" (2003). Today's reading includes solos by Michael Ward-Bergeman on accordion, Gary Washington on tenor banjo and Byron Asher on alto saxophone. To this day, "Dulgo Horo" remains our second best all-time performer on Spotify, right after "Serpent Maigre" the first song we put out in your "Good Music For You" club way back in May of 2014.

I don't mind telling you that having a good batch of tracks in the can is going to be a BIG help to your old pal Ben. We crossed a threshold a couple of years ago where we had recorded all the music that we play on our gigs. So that's meant that every time we go into the studio to record more Good Music For You, I have to come up with a totally fresh arrangement and the players have to learn it on the fly. These live tracks, although it is mostly material you'll be familiar with, provide an experience of our live vibe and also buy us some time to come up with more material you won't have heard before.

As always thanks for being there. Remember, "No you, no us!"
