Panorama Jazz Band feat. Katherine McClain - Je Veux Vivre ("Juliette's Waltz")

from Song-of-the-Month Club: Good Music For You by Panorama Jazz Band and Panorama Brass Band plus special guests

Our September 2014 track is something completely new and different for us. While it is our second recording that originates from the realm of classical music (nineteenth century Paris, in fact*), it is our first foray into the world of opera. For this, we are privileged to collaborate with the multi-faceted New Orleans vocalist Katherine McClain whose special talent is that of the coloratura soprano.

Patrick and Ben met Katherine when they were asked to accompany her in her portrayal of the legendary diva Adelina Patti (1843-1919). That night the three of them premiered a hastily assembled arrangement of "Je Veux Vivre" with banjo and clarinet accompaniment and, on the way home from the gig, the two instrumentalists decided to work up a setting for the full band and give Katherine the kind of backing she and this tour de force deserved.

"Je Veux Vivre" ("I Want To Live"), also known as "Juliette's Waltz," is from the first act of Charles Gounod's opera, “Roméo et Juliette”, first premiered in Paris, April 27th, 1867. At a masked ball in the Capulet's palace in Verona, the young Juliet is declaring that, instead of being married to Count Paris (a kinsman of the prince), she wants to live and experience the intoxication of youth, of this night, forever. Immediately thereafter, however, she meets and falls in love with Romeo of the rival Montague clan and her fate is sealed.
