about
Back in November of 2014, we put out our very first holiday release, "Home for the Holidays" (GMFY #7). Your Panorama track for December 2020 is an updated version we call "Staying Home For The Holidays."
I had an email a couple of weeks ago asking if Panorama could come in the studio to do an audio and video recording for the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park. They needed about 30 minutes of Hanukkah-themed content for their social media (stay tuned for the link when it finally comes out). I promptly texted the band and the next day we gathered again at Marigny Recording Studios, aka Luthjens' (where we did that live recording on Valentine's day).
2014's "Home for the Holidays" (as well as the 2020 edition) is really a Jewish instrumental number that has no traditional connection to Hanukkah or any other holiday. It is an old collection of Hassidic melodies originally recorded in New York City, 1927, by the Boibriker Kapelle (featuring the legendary Dave Tarras on clarinet) under the title "Ch'sidishe Nigunim."
The only change to the new arrangement is that I overdubbed a brief vocal part sung from the point of view of many this year who are keeping safe and celebrating at home alone. As the lyric states, "this year must be different."
Special thanks to Matt Hampsey, Jon Beebe and all the gang at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park for including Panorama in their Hanukkah celebrations, for financing the recording session and for graciously granting permission for us to share this recording with you.

lyrics
Staying Home for the Holidays
This year must be different
Sitting here all alone
Lacking fun activities
Using creativity
For Holiday festivities
Staying safe at home.
