about

People sometimes recommend music they think Panorama would enjoy learning and playing. It doesn't often turn out to be anything that really catches my fancy but there is one notable exception. Robert is a French guy who used to hang out at the Spotted Cat although I haven't seen him there in a while. (I hope he's OK.) Back in the 60s, I believe, Robert was a jazz critic living in Brazil and writing for a French paper. One day he hands me three CDs of Brazilian music and says, "I think you'll dig these."

Two of them were pretty cool but one really knocked me out, "Altamiro Carrilho e Sua Bandinha Na T.V." You can listen to it on YouTube but it isn't what you might expect when you think of Brazilian music. Much of it is actually very "military march-y," rather square to my sensibility. But that CD was my soundtrack the summer I spent cooking at the Quaker camp in Maryland my kids went to. What grabbed me was how the arranger, presumably Sr. Carrilho (1924-2012), also a spectacular flautist, created so many various musical moments with that little eight-piece band that sounds so much bigger. Really spoke to me as an arranger writing for a similar group.

Panorama did a recording session last Tuesday (May 24) and we got five really great, fun tracks to send you between now and October. The lineup for this session was an eight-piece brass band plus banjo on three of the tunes. Your song-of-the-month for June is a charming Brazilian march in a choro vein called "Flor Amorosa." The title sounds romantic but the feel is more of a street parade, what I often think of as a "flag waver."

Last fall, we did a few weddings and backyard parties with just an eight-piece group out of the usual 16 in the brass band. There's nothing like the thrill and the power of that huge mob of musicians out on the street blowing full tilt. But playing with the 8-pc (clarinet, alto sax, 2 trumpets, trombone, tuba, snare and bass drum), there was an intimacy. You heard everything. And we were able to create those moments as an ensemble that capture your attention and draw you into the present.

Give this one a listen and let me know how it feels.

Thanks for all your support, tell two friends about "Good Music For You" and let's make a party, y'all!
