about
Hi Folks, here's another track from our May 16 session revisiting material off of our first three albums. Originally released on our 2003 CD, “Another Hot Night In February,” "On the Funny Side of the Street" is our take on the jazz standard with a very similar name (insert "Sunny Side"). The main difference here is that we do it in 7/8 time, dividing each measure, ||:3-2-2:||. Unless you're into Bulgarian folk dance (which many of our fan-base are), you're probably gonna have a hard time feeling this one.
If you listened to WWOZ back in the day, you might remember the "Jolly Jazz Calendar" (originated by everybody's friend and social pivot point, Pat Jolly). Every day the announcer would read the goings-on for that night (compiled by Pat) over James Booker's barrelhouse rendition of "Sunny Side" (from his 1983 album "New Orleans Piano Wizard: Live!"). I was always taken with his rollicking 12/8 rhythm (the measure divided ||:3-3-3-3:||), as well as his cool coda at the end of the tune where he takes a quick lap around your basic turnaround changes ("Tiger Rag," "Bogalusa Strut," "Bourbon Street Parade") before tagging the ending.
Anyhow, I wanted to graft Booker's 12/8 coda onto our 7/8 groove, but how?
The answer was simple. Since both time signatures begin with a triplet, when the moment arrives to modulate from 7/8 to 12/8, we just keep playing triplets, like this: |3-2-2|3-2-2|3-3-3-3||… Check it out right at 2:38, as Charlie and Mark (having held their fire until then) finally jump in on trombone and banjo.
We hope you dig it! Stay cool and thanks as always for your support.
At your service,
Ben Schenck
