about

Shortly after Katrina, when much of New Orleans was still vacant, a strange and beautiful phenomenon occurred. Sunflowers somehow began sprouting up all over town, inspiring Panorama tuba man Matt Perrine to form a band and call it "Sunflower City." I was fortunate to get the call on clarinet and before long found myself in the recording studio with Matt and a roster of New Orleans musicians, all of whom I admired tremendously. One of the tunes on the docket that day was an original number of his, "Sougouya," conceived in a West African style and featuring Ivorian percussionist and dancer Seguenon Koné on djembé. The title refers to a Nigerian dish of grilled goat and vegetables.

If you listen to New Orleans Public Radio, 89.9 WWNO, you'll recognize this tune as the theme song for Susan Larson's locally produced literary spotlight, "The Reading Life." Our recording features accordionist Michael Ward-Bergeman taking a ride over the form and then drummer Doug Garrison with an open solo.

So, back in December, while I was working on putting out our New Year's track, I knew we didn't have anything lined up for February and I was feeling a bit weary about it; uninspired, like "what the heck are we gonna do?" I was chatting with Matt about this at a gig and he offered to let Panorama record "Sougouya" and to run the recording session. (He even cooked up a bunch of delicious food for the session that day, thereby raising the bar for studio hospitality.) Anyway, getting that extra month was a huge load off my mind. Now we have a terrific new track in our catalog and I have a couple things in the works for our Feb 17th session. Thanks Matt!

Enjoy this plate of sougouya. Thanks for listening and for your continued support. And by the way, Happy Mardi Gras! Be on the lookout for Panorama BRASS Band. If you see us, holler.
