about

On Thursday, Jan 20th, my phone rings and the voice on the other end says "I work for the New Orleans Pelicans (our pro basketball team) and we need a group to play a seven minute medley of Star Wars themes during half-time at Monday's game." I said we could do that and floated a nice, fat fee. They came back with a smaller number so I said "no thanks" but that we could totally nail it at my original price. They eventually came around.

Then I suddenly had a new problem: we had to play a seven minute medley of Star Wars themes during half-time at Monday's game.

We'd recently done a few gigs with an 8-pc brass band and I was really digging that sound. In contrast to the overwhelming power of the full band (10-17pcs) this combo has plenty of strength but also a sweet intimacy allowing for a wide range vibes, tones and moments. So I texted those guys and, miraculously, they were all available for the gig as well as a rehearsal the day before.

My teens took piano lessons when they were little and I had gotten them a book of Star Wars tunes arranged for kids. Adapting from that, I was able to cobble together a piano score of what I considered the most memorable bits from the unavoidable movie franchise and that was what I brought to the rehearsal.

The great thing about playing with the same cats for 15+ years is that we have our creative process. By the end of that 2 hour rehearsal, we'd worked out a tight seven minute arrangement which is our offering for today. We must have picked up the tempo slightly in the studio because the present track clocks in at 6:44!

The gig at the basketball game was stressful, thrilling and weird. The strangest moment was rehearsing center court before the game with the New Orleans Pelicans warming up and completely ignoring us at one end and the Indiana Pacers at the other. We did indeed nail it that night in front of several thousand basketball fans and left the Arena feeling pretty pleased with ourselves.

Here are the timings and cues:
0:00 - Main Title (Star Wars Theme)
0:57 - Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)
1:51 - Bonfire on Tatooine (Original)
3:10 - Funeral Dirge (Obi Wan Kenobi Theme)
4:46 – Second Line (Cantina Band Theme)

We hope y'all enjoy the various cinematic moods of this one. Let me know how it lands on your ear.

As always, thanks for listening and for your financial support. Please tell two friends about "Good Music For You" and let's make a party, y'all!
